Kick-Ass Links to Freeware/Shareware Sites

Scarlet Recommends
All these sites are worth trotting through at least once, but a few have become personal favorites, because they are easy to surf, they have a selection of software that interests me more than others, or they are just fun places to wander around in. You might have other preferences.  Tell me about them.  By the way, if you find a dead link, please let me know so I can delete it from the list.  Thanks.
Site reviews or rates software = [r]
Most of these sites at least describe the software so you get some idea what the heck you might be downloading, but several also either review software performance or rate them with stars, dots, checks, cows, dogs, and gracious knows what else. You'll often run across the same software at other sites and discover much to your astonishment that opinions don't always coincide.
